THE BASICS

What are empty leg flights?

How empty leg flights work

Every private charter creates at least one leg the operator has to fly without a paying client — either returning the jet to base, or repositioning it to collect the next charter. Selling that empty leg at a discount covers fuel and crew costs that would otherwise be absorbed by the operator. The result: the same jet, the same crew, at a fraction of the published charter price.

Empty legs vs regular private jet charter

A regular charter lets you choose the aircraft, departure airport and exact slot. An empty leg fixes all three — the route, date and aircraft are already set. You're buying access to a flight that's happening anyway, not commissioning a new one. Trade flexibility for price.

Why prices can be 40–75% lower

The operator's fixed costs — aircraft positioning, fuel, crew hours — are already paid for by the inbound or outbound charter. Anything they recover on the empty leg is incremental margin, so they'd rather discount aggressively than fly empty. On hot summer corridors with multiple operators repositioning the same direction, that competitive pressure pushes savings to 60–75%.

Common terms explained

  • Deadhead leg — a flight with no paying passengers, usually returning a jet to base.
  • Ferry flight — moving an aircraft between airports for operational reasons (maintenance, crew change).
  • Repositioning flight — moving an aircraft to be in position for the next confirmed charter.
  • One-way charter — a paid charter sold as a single direction, which itself creates an empty leg back.

HOW DO EMPTY LEGS WORK

Book an empty leg in four steps.

1. Search live inventory

Browse real-time empty leg availability filtered by route, date and aircraft. New legs appear continuously from our global operator network.

2. Set an alert

Tell us your preferred route and date window. We'll notify you the moment a matching repositioning leg appears — usually within 24–72 hours.

3. Confirm in minutes

Empty legs are first-come, first-served. Once you accept the quote, we lock the aircraft and issue a signed contract within minutes.

4. Fly the same jet

Same vetted operator, same crew, same cabin as a full-price charter. The only difference is the route was already on the schedule.

BENEFITS

Why fly an empty leg.

Massive cost savings

Same aircraft, 25–75% less than the published charter rate. Every euro of discount is itemised on your quote.

Same luxury experience

Identical jet, identical crew, identical cabin and catering. The only thing changing is the commercial arrangement.

Faster, last-minute booking

Confirm in 30–60 minutes. Empty legs are the best tool for spontaneous travel within a 24–72 hour window.

Environmental upside

The flight is happening regardless. Filling otherwise-empty seats reduces the per-passenger carbon footprint of the leg.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES

Honest pros and cons.

Pros

  • Save 25–75% on the same aircraft you'd charter at full price
  • Identical safety, crew, cabin and service experience
  • Last-minute availability — often within 24–72 hours
  • Environmental upside: the leg flies regardless, you're filling empty seats

Cons & limitations

  • Fixed date, fixed route — almost no flexibility on departure window
  • Inventory only appears when a paid charter creates the repositioning need
  • Aircraft type and operator are fixed — you choose from what's listed
  • Non-refundable once confirmed (trip insurance recommended)

Who should book empty legs?

Leisure travellers with flexible dates, second-home owners on repeat corridors (Zurich–Nice, Munich–Ibiza, Geneva–Mykonos), and anyone willing to trade a fixed departure window for a 40–75% discount on luxury private travel.

TIPS & BEST PRACTICES

How to land the best empty leg deals.

Be flexible on airports

London has six business airports. Nice and Cannes are interchangeable. Adding a 30-minute drive on either end can double your available inventory.

Widen the date window

±1 day flexibility typically triples the empty legs you'll see on a corridor. ±3 days is the sweet spot for serious savings.

Set alerts early

Empty legs surface 24–72 hours before departure but the best ones are gone within hours. An alert is the only realistic way to catch the hot deals.

Know what to expect on board

Standard private aviation service — premium catering, dedicated crew, full cabin. The only difference from a full-price charter is the route was already on the schedule.

EMPTY-LEG ALERTS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Empty legs, explained.

What is an empty leg flight?+

An empty leg flight (also called a deadhead, ferry flight or repositioning flight) is a private jet leg that the operator has to fly without passengers — typically returning to base, or moving the aircraft to pick up the next client. Because the cost is already absorbed by the prior or upcoming charter, the operator sells that leg at a steep discount.

How much can I save on empty leg flights?+

Typical savings are 25–50% versus an ad-hoc charter on the same aircraft. On hot lanes — summer Mediterranean, ski season, US east-coast weekends — we routinely see 60–75% off published charter rates. A Citation XLS that lists at €18,000 one-way Zurich–Nice can drop to €5,500–€7,000 as an empty leg.

Are empty leg flights safe and luxurious?+

Identical to a full-price charter. The aircraft, operator, crew, cabin and catering are exactly the same — only the commercial arrangement differs. We only list empty legs on aircraft from operators that meet ARGUS Gold/Platinum, Wyvern Wingman or IS-BAO standards.

Can I choose the departure time?+

Only within the operator's existing window — usually a 1–3 hour band on a fixed date. Flexibility on departure time is the price of the discount. If you need a specific slot, an ad-hoc charter is the better tool.

How do I book an empty leg flight with The Limitless Sky?+

Browse the live inventory above, click 'Book' on the flight you want, and our team confirms aircraft availability with the operator. Once you accept the quote, we issue a signed charter contract and collect payment. The entire process usually takes 30–60 minutes.

Are empty legs available every day?+

Globally, yes — thousands of repositioning legs are filed every day. On a specific route and date, no — availability depends on whether an operator has a paid charter that creates a matching repositioning need. This is why setting an alert is the best strategy.

What happens if my plans change?+

Empty legs are non-refundable once confirmed because the discount is built on a fixed aircraft and slot. We strongly recommend trip-cancellation insurance for empty leg bookings. If the operator cancels (e.g. the original charter is rescheduled), you receive a full refund or a comparable replacement leg.

Do you offer empty legs worldwide or mainly Europe?+

Worldwide. Our live inventory above pulls from operators across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Europe and the US east coast are the densest markets, but transatlantic and intra-Asia legs surface regularly.

Can I change the route or add a stop?+

Sometimes. Minor reroutes are possible if the alternative airport is close to the original and the diversion doesn't add significant flight time. We'll check directly with the operator and quote any delta in writing.

What's the difference between empty legs, jet cards and membership programs?+

Empty legs are opportunistic — cheapest per flight, no commitment, but limited availability. Jet cards pre-purchase guaranteed hours at a fixed rate with no schedule constraints. Memberships sit in between. Most of our clients use empty legs for leisure trips and a jet card or ad-hoc charter for business travel.
