THE BASICS
Empty legs explained.
What are empty leg flights?
A private jet leg the operator must fly without passengers — usually returning to base or repositioning for the next charter. Sold at a discount because the cost is already absorbed.
Empty legs vs regular charter
A regular charter lets you pick the aircraft, airports and slot. An empty leg fixes all three. You buy access to a flight that's already happening.
Why empty legs cost 25–75% less
Positioning, fuel and crew are already paid by the paying charter. Anything the operator recovers on the empty leg is incremental margin.
How to book an empty leg
Pick a card in the list above, click Book, and our desk confirms with the operator. Signed contract and payment usually inside 60 minutes.
PROS AND LIMITATIONS
Honest trade-offs.
Pros
- Save 25–75% on the same aircraft you'd charter at full price
- Identical safety, crew, cabin and service experience
- Last-minute availability — often within 24–72 hours
- Environmental upside: the leg flies regardless, you're filling empty seats
Limitations
- Fixed date, fixed route — almost no flexibility on departure window
- Inventory only appears when a paid charter creates the repositioning need
- Aircraft type and operator are fixed — you choose from what's listed
- Non-refundable once confirmed (trip insurance recommended)

EMPTY LEG FLIGHT FAQ
Empty legs, explained.
What is an empty leg flight?+
An empty leg flight (also called a deadhead, ferry flight or repositioning flight) is a private jet leg that the operator has to fly without passengers — typically returning to base, or moving the aircraft to pick up the next client. Because the cost is already absorbed by the prior or upcoming charter, the operator sells that leg at a steep discount.
How much can I save on empty leg flights?+
Typical savings are 25–50% versus an ad-hoc charter on the same aircraft. On hot lanes — summer Mediterranean, ski season, US east-coast weekends — we routinely see 60–75% off published charter rates. A Citation XLS that lists at €18,000 one-way Zurich–Nice can drop to €5,500–€7,000 as an empty leg.
Are empty leg flights safe and luxurious?+
Identical to a full-price charter. The aircraft, operator, crew, cabin and catering are exactly the same — only the commercial arrangement differs. We only list empty legs on aircraft from operators that meet ARGUS Gold/Platinum, Wyvern Wingman or IS-BAO standards.
Can I choose the departure time?+
Only within the operator's existing window — usually a 1–3 hour band on a fixed date. Flexibility on departure time is the price of the discount. If you need a specific slot, an ad-hoc charter is the better tool.
How do I book an empty leg flight with The Limitless Sky?+
Browse the live inventory above, click 'Book' on the flight you want, and our team confirms aircraft availability with the operator. Once you accept the quote, we issue a signed charter contract and collect payment. The entire process usually takes 30–60 minutes.
Are empty legs available every day?+
Globally, yes — thousands of repositioning legs are filed every day. On a specific route and date, no — availability depends on whether an operator has a paid charter that creates a matching repositioning need. This is why setting an alert is the best strategy.
What happens if my plans change?+
Empty legs are non-refundable once confirmed because the discount is built on a fixed aircraft and slot. We strongly recommend trip-cancellation insurance for empty leg bookings. If the operator cancels (e.g. the original charter is rescheduled), you receive a full refund or a comparable replacement leg.
Do you offer empty legs worldwide or mainly Europe?+
Worldwide. Our live inventory above pulls from operators across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Europe and the US east coast are the densest markets, but transatlantic and intra-Asia legs surface regularly.
Can I change the route or add a stop?+
Sometimes. Minor reroutes are possible if the alternative airport is close to the original and the diversion doesn't add significant flight time. We'll check directly with the operator and quote any delta in writing.
What's the difference between empty legs, jet cards and membership programs?+
Empty legs are opportunistic — cheapest per flight, no commitment, but limited availability. Jet cards pre-purchase guaranteed hours at a fixed rate with no schedule constraints. Memberships sit in between. Most of our clients use empty legs for leisure trips and a jet card or ad-hoc charter for business travel.
Why is there a map and a list?+
The list is the main booking view because it shows aircraft, dates, pricing and enquiry options clearly. The map is a visual market view that helps you explore selected repositioning movements without replacing the list.
