DECISION FRAMEWORK

How to choose the right aircraft

Four inputs decide the category: passenger count, non-stop range required, runway/airport constraints, and cabin-time comfort. Get those right and the aircraft picks itself.

  1. 1. Passenger count & luggage

Under 7 passengers with cabin bags: light or midsize. 8–10 with hold luggage: super-midsize or heavy. 10+ or ski/golf equipment: heavy or ultra-long-range.

  2. 2. Non-stop range

    Under 1,500 nm (London–Rome): light jet is enough. 1,500–3,500 nm (London–Dubai, NYC–LA): midsize / super-midsize. 3,500+ nm non-stop (London–NYC, Dubai–London, NYC–Tokyo): heavy or ultra-long-range.

  3. 3. Airport constraints

Short runway (London City, Lugano, Courchevel, St Moritz, Aspen): steep-approach light jet or turboprop. Standard 1,800 m+ runway: any category. Slot-restricted hubs (Nice in July, Geneva during WEF): book 2–4 weeks ahead regardless of category.

  4. 4. Cabin time & comfort

Over 3 hours in the air: choose a full stand-up cabin, dedicated lavatory and external baggage — that means midsize or above. Over 6 hours or overnight: heavy or ultra-long-range with flat-bed berths and a proper galley.

  5. 5. Budget & empty-leg fit

One-way missions where dates flex: check the empty-leg board first — same aircraft, 40–75% off. Fixed dates: expect full charter rate for the matched category, plus positioning if the aircraft is not already on the field.

FLEET FAQ

Aircraft questions, answered

What is the difference between a light, midsize and heavy jet?
Cabin size, range and cost. Light jets seat 6–7 for missions under 1,500 nm from around $1,900/hr. Midsize and super-midsize seat 7–9 for transcontinental legs up to 3,500 nm from $3,200–$4,200/hr. Heavy and ultra-long-range jets seat 10–16 with intercontinental range from $5,900/hr.
Which private jet is best for transatlantic flights?
Ultra-long-range jets (Global 7500, Gulfstream G650ER/G700, Falcon 8X) are the standard for non-stop transatlantic missions. Heavy jets (Falcon 2000LXS, Challenger 650) handle London–NYC eastbound reliably but may need a fuel stop westbound with a full cabin against headwinds.
Can any private jet land at London City, Courchevel or St Moritz?
No. These airports require steep-approach certification, short-field performance, or both. Suitable aircraft include the Embraer Phenom 300E, Citation CJ3+, Pilatus PC-24 and King Air 350 turboprop. Every quote we send is pre-validated against the specific runway.
How much does it cost to charter a private jet?
Indicative all-in rates: light jet from $1,900/hr, midsize $3,200/hr, super-midsize $4,200/hr, heavy $5,900/hr, ultra-long-range $9,500/hr. The all-inclusive quote adds positioning, landing/handling and any concierge such as helicopter transfer. See our charter cost guide for a detailed breakdown.
Are turboprops safe for private charter?
Yes. Modern single-engine (Pilatus PC-12) and twin-engine (King Air 350) turboprops operated by ARGUS Gold/Platinum, Wyvern Wingman or IS-BAO carriers are held to the same operational standards as jets. They excel at short-runway, high-altitude airfields jets cannot use.
How do I compare two specific aircraft?
Open the comparison hub, pick any two airframes and see range, cabin dimensions, cruise speed, hourly rate and typical missions side-by-side. When in doubt, tell us the mission — we return three recommendations with the trade-offs written out.

Tell us the mission. We'll send three aircraft.
