What is a semi-private flight?
A semi-private flight is any private aircraft trip where you buy individual seats rather than chartering the whole jet. The aircraft itself is usually a 30-seat regional jet (JSX uses Embraer 135s) or a 9–16-seat business jet (Aero, Surf Air). You skip the main terminal, security lines and bag drop — you drive up to a private terminal 20 minutes before departure.
Per-seat vs whole-aircraft — the core trade-off
| Semi-private (JSX, Aero) | Empty leg charter | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price | $700–$1,500 / seat | $3,000–$15,000 / aircraft |
| Who you fly with | Strangers | Only your party |
| Schedule | Fixed, published routes | Operator's repositioning timing |
| Aircraft | Same on every flight | Whatever the operator is moving |
| Best for | Solo / pair, regular city-pair travel | Group of 2–8, leisure flexibility |
| Privacy | Private terminal, shared cabin | Full charter — entire aircraft is yours |
When semi-private wins
- —Solo traveller or pair on a route like Burbank → Las Vegas or Westchester → West Palm Beach
- —You want predictability — published schedule, refundable tickets, frequent-flyer points
- —You don't need to leave from a specific airport on a specific day
- —You're price-anchored to refundable business-class fares
When an empty leg wins
- —You're flying with 3+ people — per-seat math stops working past 3 passengers
- —You want the entire cabin (privacy, meetings, family, pets)
- —You want a real charter aircraft (midsize+ cabin, full catering, dedicated crew)
- —You're willing to flex date by ±1 day for the discount
The math on a real example
Four people, New York → Miami. JSX or a comparable semi-private at $900/seat = $3,600 total, fixed schedule, shared cabin. A typical Citation XLS+ empty leg on the KTEB → KPBI corridor runs $7,500–$9,500 — whole aircraft, your own crew, departure window negotiated with the operator. Per head, the empty leg is $1,900–$2,400 — more than JSX, but you get private cabin, pets, oversized luggage and a flexible departure window.
Past five passengers, the empty leg starts beating semi-private on a per-seat basis too — which is why we usually quote both options when a client asks.

FAQ
Frequently asked
Is a semi-private flight the same as an empty leg?
No. Semi-private is per-seat travel on a published route — you fly with strangers. An empty leg is a whole-aircraft private charter sold at a discount because it's a repositioning flight. Different products, different price points.
How much does a semi-private flight cost?
Most JSX, Aero and Surf Air routes price between $700 and $1,500 per seat one-way. Premium routes (LON ↔ IBZ on Aero) can reach $2,500/seat in peak season.
Do you go through TSA on a semi-private flight?
No. Semi-private operators use private terminals (FBOs) where you arrive 20 minutes before departure, walk through without security lines, and board directly.
Can I bring luggage and pets on a semi-private flight?
Luggage allowances are more generous than commercial (usually 50 lbs checked + 25 lbs carry-on). Pets are allowed on most semi-private operators — confirm policy at booking.
When should I choose an empty leg over a semi-private seat?
When you're flying with 3 or more people, want the whole cabin to yourself, or want a real charter aircraft instead of a regional jet. For a solo traveller on a published city pair, semi-private is usually cheaper.
How do I get a private jet quote?
Send your route, dates and party size via the Limitless Sky contact form. A confirmed all-inclusive quote is returned within 10 minutes, 24/7.
