The Different Types of Private Jets

6 MIN READAIRCRAFT & FLEET

Private aircraft fall into six broad categories. Picking the right one is a function of mission length, party size and the airports you need to access.

Turboprops

Single- or twin-engine propeller aircraft. 4–9 seats, ~1,000 nm range, ideal for ultra-short hops and small airports. Examples: Pilatus PC-12, King Air 350.

Light jets

6–7 seats, ~1,500–2,000 nm range. The European workhorse. Examples: Citation CJ3+, Phenom 300E, Pilatus PC-24.

Midsize jets

7–9 seats, ~3,000 nm range, full stand-up cabin. Best for 3–4 hour sectors. Examples: Citation Latitude, Hawker 800XP, Legacy 500.

Heavy jets

10–14 seats, 4,000–6,500 nm range. Transatlantic capable. Examples: Falcon 2000LXS, Gulfstream G450, Legacy 650.

Ultra-long-range / VIP airliners

12–19 seats in ULR (G650, Global 7500, Falcon 8X). 19–50+ seats in VIP airliner conversions (ACJ319, BBJ, Lineage 1000). Range up to 7,750 nm and full bedrooms.
