IS-BAO
International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations — a voluntary, peer-reviewed code of best practice for business-aviation flight departments.
IN PRACTICE
IS-BAO is published by the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC). Registration is staged across three levels, with Level 3 requiring a mature, audited safety management system.
What is-bao actually measures. Is-bao is a third-party assessment of how an operator manages safety risk — pilot experience, training currency, maintenance discipline, dispatch procedures, safety management system maturity and accident history. It is not a guarantee, but it is the best independent signal available to a broker.
How we use is-bao when sourcing operators. Every operator we quote must hold a current is-bao rating or an equivalent recognised standard. We re-check status before each trip because ratings can lapse, be suspended or be downgraded between bookings.
What is-bao doesn't cover. Is-bao focuses on the operator and aircraft. It does not score cabin service, on-time performance or pricing. We layer our own performance data on top so the recommendation reflects the trip you actually want, not just the safest paper file.
Questions to ask any broker about is-bao. Which standard do you require? Do you re-verify before every trip? Will you show me the certificate? A broker that can't answer in one minute is not running the diligence they advertise.
