CHARTER BUYER'S GUIDE
Capri remains the most sought-after summer destination in the Mediterranean for the ultra-high-net-worth segment, yet logistically, it remains one of the more complex locations to access. Situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, the island’s steep limestone cliffs and lack of flat terrain mean there is no runway on the island. Consequently, the 'charter to Capri' is always a multi-modal operation. The standard procedure for those avoiding the congested commercial ferry terminals at Naples or Sorrento is a private jet flight into Naples Capodichino (NAP), followed by a seamless transition to a waiting Airbus H130 or AgustaWestland AW109 helicopter. This 12-minute aerial transfer avoids the 90-minute commute involving road traffic through Naples and the public hydrofoil schedules.
International clients typically comprise private owners, family offices, and corporate leadership who converge on the island between late May and early September. While the island is small, its infrastructure is stretched to capacity during this period. The demand for private aviation slots into the region is driven by three main factors: the arrival of the Mediterranean yachting fleet at Marina Grande, the opening of the five-star hospitality season, and high-profile events such as the UNICEF Gala. Because Naples is the primary gateway, slot management and helicopter synchronization are the two most critical variables in a successful mission to Capri.
The seasonality of Capri is rigid. The peak season runs from mid-June to the end of August. During these ten weeks, Naples Capodichino (NAP) experiences severe slot constraints. Private jet operators must secure Landing and Take-off Slots (LTS) weeks in advance. For weekends in July, last-minute requests (less than 72 hours) frequently face 'slot-denial', forcing aircraft to divert to Salerno or Rome. Weather windows during the summer are generally stable, though the 'Sirocco' winds originating from North Africa can occasionally ground helicopter transfers. In such cases, we pivot to private Water Taxis (Itama 38 or similar) from Mergellina or Naples Harbour.
Shoulder seasons—specifically May and late September—offer significant advantages for the charter buyer. Aircraft availability is higher, and the pressure on the Atlantica FBO in Naples is substantially reduced. During the winter (November to March), many of the island’s premier hotels, including the Quisisana and Capri Palace, close for renovation. Charter activity during this time is almost exclusively limited to local residents or property owners, and helicopter services operate on a reduced 'on-request' basis. If booking for August, a lead time of at least 4-6 weeks is recommended to ensure both preferred aircraft positioning and optimal slot timing that aligns with hotel check-in requirements.
Naples is the primary hub for Capri. It features a 2,628-metre (8,622 ft) runway, comfortably accommodating all aircraft classes up to the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) and Airbus Corporate Jet (ACJ). The airport is located just 6km north-northeast of the city centre. For private aviation, the dedicated terminal is managed by the Atlantica FBO. This facility provides a discreet environment away from the main commercial terminal, with integrated customs and immigration.
Operational constraints at NAP include a strict slot coordination policy. During the summer, the ramp can become congested, leading to 'drop-and-go' requirements where the aircraft must reposition to a secondary airport like Rome Ciampino or Bari after offloading passengers, as overnight parking is often restricted. The airport is open 24 hours for emergencies, but night movements for private jets are subject to noise restrictions and higher fees after 23:00 local time.
Located roughly 70km from Naples, Salerno has historically been an underutilised alternative. However, with recent runway extensions and infrastructure upgrades, it is becoming a viable 'relief' airport for Capri. The runway is currently approximately 2,000 metres. It is particularly useful when Naples is fully booked for slots or during major events like the Monaco Grand Prix or Italian Grand Prix when the regional air traffic peaks. A helicopter transfer from Salerno to Capri takes approximately 20 minutes, slightly longer than from Naples, but avoids the urban congestion of the Naples metro area.
In the event of a total slot closure at Naples, Rome Ciampino is the most robust diversion. Although it requires a 50-minute helicopter flight or a 2.5-hour chauffeur drive to the coast, it offers 24/7 operations, significantly more FBO options (including Signature and Universal), and extensive hangar space and parking. For ultra-long-range flights from the US or Asia, some clients choose to clear customs in Rome before taking a smaller shuttle flight or helicopter down to the Amalfi coast.
For short hops from European hubs like Geneva, Nice, or Zurich, Light Jets are the most cost-effective solution. The Cessna Citation CJ3 and Embraer Phenom 300 are the preferred models. The Phenom 300, in particular, is favoured for its class-leading baggage capacity—an essential factor for clients heading to Capri with multiple suitcases for various social engagements. Note that Light Jets are typically limited to 6 or 7 passengers and have restricted galley facilities.
For routes within the 3-to-4-hour range, such as London to Naples, Midsize jets offer the necessary stand-up cabin comfort. The Cessna Citation XLS+ is a reliable workhorse for this route, while the Bombardier Challenger 350 and Embraer Praetor 600 represent the premium end of the category. These aircraft provide significantly more cabin headroom and a full refreshment centre. The Praetor 600 is particularly well-suited for flights originating from North Africa or the Middle East directly to Naples, offering transcontinental range and excellent short-field performance.
For trans-Atlantic arrivals from Teterboro or Van Nuys, or for groups exceeding 10 passengers, Heavy Jets are required. The Gulfstream G450 and Bombardier Challenger 605 offer wide cabins and high baggage allowances. However, the Gulfstream G650ER and Bombardier Global 7500 are the gold standard for non-stop travel from the Americas or Asia. These aircraft can fly directly into Naples, though parking is rarely granted for more than two hours during the summer peak. Owners of these aircraft should expect the jet to reposition to a larger hub while they remain on the island.
Private jet pricing to Naples fluctuates based on the 'empty-leg' market and aircraft positioning. A flight from London to Naples (approx. 2h 50m) in a Midsize Jet typically starts at €16,500 for a one-way leg. From Geneva to Naples (approx. 1h 50m), a Light Jet such as a CJ3 can be secured from €11,200.
These figures represent base charter rates and do not include the 'Capri Premium'—the additional costs for helicopter transfers (€2,500–€4,500 per leg depending on aircraft type) or the high airport landing and handling fees at NAP during July and August. To save on costs, buyers should look for empty-leg opportunities. Since many jets fly into Naples to drop off passengers and then return empty to their base in London or Paris, a savvy charterer can often secure these return legs at a 30% to 60% discount. However, empty legs are inflexible and subject to the primary charter’s schedule. Conversely, peak-period flights can see a 20% uplift due to high demand and the necessity for aircraft to fly empty 'positioning legs' to reach the client.
The arrival experience at Naples Atlantica FBO is streamlined. Upon landing, passengers are met on the Tarmac and driven 30 metres to the FBO lounge. Customs and immigration are handled within minutes. For those using the helicopter transfer, the helipad is situated within the airport perimeter. Your luggage is transferred directly from the jet to the helicopter (note: weight and volume restrictions apply to helicopters, often requiring a separate ground transfer for heavy baggage).
Direct helicopter flights land at the Capri Heliport (Damecuta) near Anacapri. From there, your hotel will typically provide a private shuttle for the 10-15 minute drive to Capri town or the Marina Grande. Alternatively, if arriving by boat, a chauffeur will drive you from the FBO to the Mergellina or Pozzuoli docks (approximately 25-40 minutes depending on traffic), where a private speedboat awaits for the 35-minute crossing. This is often preferred by those staying at waterfront villas or those who wish to begin their holiday with the dramatic sea-view approach to the Faraglioni rocks.
Capri is divided into two main hubs: Capri Town and Anacapri. Capri Town is the centre of gravity for socialites, centered around the 'Piazzetta'. Here, the Grand Hotel Quisisana serves as the historic anchor, offering a grand-dame aesthetic and a front-row seat to the island's evening 'passeggiata'. For those seeking more seclusion with sea views overlooking the Gulf of Naples, JK Place Capri is the preferred choice, known for its boutique, residential feel near Marina Grande.
Dining on the island is an institution. Da Paolino is famous for its tables set under a canopy of lemon trees and is a staple for large group dinners. For the best beach club experience, La Fontelina offers an iconic setting facing the Faraglioni, accessible by boat or a steep footpath. For high-end gastronomy, Il Riccio near the Blue Grotto provides a world-class seafood menu and a legendary 'Temptation Room' for desserts. Those staying in Anacapri often frequent the Capri Palace Jumeirah, which houses the island’s only two-Michelin-starred restaurant, L'Olivo, and features a more medical-grade spa and wellness focus.
For a standard European flight, we recommend a booking window of 14 to 21 days to secure the best balance of price and aircraft quality. However, for travel during the peaks of July or the August bank holiday, 6 to 8 weeks is necessary to confirm the desired Naples slots. Same-day feasibility is possible during the low season (October to April) but is highly restricted in summer.
To provide an accurate quote, we require the number of passengers, the exact luggage count, and whether a helicopter or boat transfer is preferred for the final leg. Once the aircraft is 'firm', we lock in the slots and coordinate the secondary transfer. For high-profile individuals, we also coordinate the 'Greeter' service at Naples, ensuring a seamless transition from the aircraft stairs to the helicopter cabin without any interaction with the general public or commercial passengers.
