How Early Should You Arrive for a Private Jet?

4 MIN READOPERATIONS & TRAVEL

One of the great pleasures of private aviation is arriving 10–15 minutes before departure and walking straight onto the aircraft. Here is the realistic timing for every scenario.

The FBO process

FBOs (Fixed Base Operators) are private terminals. You park kerbside, hand keys to a valet, walk through a small lounge and board the aircraft via the apron — often without showing identification more than once.

Security

Identity is verified by the crew on the apron. There are no commercial security lines. Luggage is loaded directly into the aircraft's hold.

Customs

For Schengen-to-Schengen or domestic US flights, customs is irrelevant. For international arrivals and departures, customs officers come to the FBO — typically a 5-minute formality.

Domestic vs international timing

  • Domestic / Schengen — arrive 10–15 min before departure
  • International (e.g. EU → UK / EU → US) — arrive 25–30 min before departure
  • Restricted-airspace destinations (UAE, China, Russia) — confirm with crew

VIP handling

Heads of state, royal families and very high-profile travellers can request airside transfer directly to the aircraft, bypassing the FBO lounge entirely. Your broker arranges this.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can I arrive later than 15 minutes before departure?

Yes — within reason. The crew can hold for a known late arrival as long as the slot and crew duty time allow.
