Private Jet to Tulum: Flying Private into Tulum International (TQO)

How to fly a private jet to Tulum: the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto airport (TQO) vs Cancún, its 12,139 ft runway and private terminal, flight times from Miami, New York and Texas, entry rules and what it costs.

BY DR. CHRISTOPH LYMBERSKY · AMERICAS · 7 MIN READ · OCTOBER 30, 2026

Until late 2023, flying privately to Tulum meant landing in Cancún and driving about two hours south. That changed when Tulum International Airport "Felipe Carrillo Puerto" (TQO / MMTL) opened on 1 December 2023, with international flights from March 2024. It has a long runway and a private-aviation terminal of its own, so for most Tulum stays it is now the obvious place to land.

The short answer

This is how we plan a Tulum charter on the desk.

  • Airport: Tulum International "Felipe Carrillo Puerto" (TQO / MMTL), off Federal Highway 307 at km 201, about 20 km south-west of Tulum in a straight line.
  • Runway: one concrete runway, 12/30, 3,700 m (12,139 ft) × 45 m, per the Mexican government's decree declaring the airport international. Every business jet class fits.
  • International status: the federal government has declared TQO an international airport for Mexican and foreign aircraft, including private and charter flights, so you can fly in directly from the US or Canada and clear customs and immigration on arrival.
  • Private terminal: a general-aviation FBO, separate from the airline terminal, with its own lounges and customs and immigration support. Universal Aviation lists its hours at the FBO as 07:00 to 19:00 local time, so we confirm any arrival outside that window before you book.
  • Drive to town: roughly 40 km and 45 minutes to downtown Tulum, and about an hour to the beach hotel zone.
  • Cancún (CUN) is still a valid alternative. It has 24-hour airline operations and more handling options, but the drive to Tulum is close to two hours.

Send us your dates, passengers, bags and the address you're staying at, and we come back with all-inclusive options by aircraft class, 24/7.

Tulum (TQO) or Cancún (CUN)?

For a stay in Tulum itself, TQO is usually the better arrival. The difference is the ground leg: about 45 minutes from TQO against close to two hours from Cancún, and that matters more after a long flight.

Cancún still makes sense in a few cases:

  • You're staying further north. Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos or the Cancún hotel zone are closer to CUN than to TQO.
  • Late or early movements. If your schedule lands outside the TQO FBO's published hours, CUN is the more flexible option. We check this when we quote.
  • Empty legs. Far more private traffic goes to Cancún, so a one-way repositioning flight is more likely to show up there. Our Cancún guide covers that airport in detail.

Tell us where you're staying, and we'll recommend one airport and explain why.

The airport and the private terminal

TQO is a new, government-run airport with one long concrete runway and a parallel taxiway. The airport is run by a state-owned company, and handlers note that customs, immigration and quarantine procedures here follow their own process. In practice, that is why we always use the general-aviation FBO rather than the airline terminal.

The FBO is near the airport entrance, apart from the commercial terminal. Its published services include parking for 28 private aircraft, hangar storage, fuel, ground power, lounges, catering, customs assistance and coordination of ground transport. Universal Aviation, which handles at the FBO, says passengers are typically through in 35 to 50 minutes on international arrivals.

Which private jets can fly to Tulum nonstop?

The 12,139 ft runway doesn't limit any business jet, so range decides the cabin. Approximate great-circle distances to TQO:

FromDistanceTypical cabin
Miamiabout 530 nmLight jet
Houstonabout 700 nmLight jet
Dallasabout 905 nmLight or midsize jet
Chicagoabout 1,310 nmMidsize or super-midsize jet
New York (Teterboro)about 1,420 nmSuper-midsize jet
Torontoabout 1,470 nmSuper-midsize jet
Los Angeles (Van Nuys)about 1,840 nmSuper-midsize jet or larger
Londonabout 4,360 nmHeavy or ultra-long-range jet

Headwinds, passenger and bag weight, and fuel reserves change these limits on the day. The operator signs off the performance calculation for each flight, and we tell you if a light jet needs a fuel stop or if a larger cabin would avoid one.

Flight times and cost

As a guide, a light jet from Miami takes about an hour and three-quarters, and a super-midsize from Teterboro about three and a half hours. The exact block time depends on the aircraft and winds.

For cost, the closest benchmark we publish is our Miami to Cancún route, where desk quotes for a one-way light to midsize jet run from about €4,600 to €7,500 all-in. Tulum is roughly 70 nm further south, so expect a similar band, a little higher. Peak weeks around Christmas, New Year and Easter cost more, and a one-way may include the aircraft's return positioning. Your quote shows each item, with no hidden fees. Our charter cost guide explains how hourly rates, positioning and fees combine.

Arrival in Mexico

For US citizens, the US State Department says:

  • Passport: you need a passport book to fly to Mexico; a passport card is not accepted for air travel. Your passport must be valid at the time of entry.
  • Visa: none for tourist stays of up to 180 days. Immigration officers decide how long you can stay.
  • Entry permit: Mexico issues a digital entry form (FMMD) at its international airports. Keep the record until you leave.
  • Cash: you must declare more than USD 10,000 when you enter or leave.

Other nationalities should check with the Mexican consulate before travel. On the aircraft side, the operator files the Mexican permits and, for the return to the US, the US Customs (CBP) arrival notice. Your trip sheet tells you which US airport you clear customs at on the way home.

Getting to your villa or hotel

From TQO, it's about 45 minutes by car to downtown Tulum and about an hour to the beach hotel zone. Akumal is a little over an hour and Playa del Carmen about an hour and forty minutes. Leave extra time at busy periods, especially on the southern part of the beach road. We arrange a chauffeured car or a van sized for your bags so it's waiting when you clear customs.

Timing and empty legs

Winter and spring holidays are the busiest weeks for private flights to the Riviera Maya. Book the outbound and the return together, as early as you can. Empty legs into Tulum do appear, but not often and not for long, so set an empty-leg alert for your route and dates.
