OVERVIEW

Beechcraft Premier IA

The Beechcraft Premier IA is the only production light jet with an all-composite fuselage — a clean-sheet design that delivered a cabin wider than several midsize jets in a single-pilot, six-seat package. Around 300 airframes remain in active charter service, mostly in the US.

IN DEPTH

The complete guide to chartering the Beechcraft Premier IA

The story behind the Premier IA

The Beechcraft Premier 1 was one of the most ambitious clean-sheet business jets of the 1990s. Announced in 1995 and certified in 2001, it was the first — and to date the only — production business jet with a fully composite fuselage, built using automated fibre-placement techniques adapted from Raytheon's Hawker programme. That composite fuselage did what composite structures always promise: it allowed a wider cabin than the aluminium equivalent at the same weight and drag budget. The result was a light jet with a genuine 5-foot-6-inch cabin width, wider than several midsize jets, wrapped around a modern Williams FJ44-2A engine installation.

The current Premier IA is a 2006 refresh: modest interior updates, a Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics upgrade and a range of small aerodynamic refinements. Production ended in 2013 after 313 airframes were built, when Beechcraft's post-bankruptcy focus narrowed to the King Air line. Around 220 Premier IAs remain in active service, mostly in the US Part 135 fleet with a handful of European examples.

For charter clients, the Premier IA is the aircraft you book when you want light-jet economics and single-pilot operation, but the passenger group needs a wider cabin than the CJ or Phenom families offer. It is a genuinely differentiated aircraft in the current market — no other light jet delivers this combination of cabin width and cost profile.

On board: the Premier IA cabin

The Premier IA's headline feature is its cabin width. At 5 feet 6 inches — wider than a Citation CJ4, wider than a Phenom 300, wider than a Learjet 75 and wider than an XLS+ — it delivers a genuine sense of shoulder room that no other light jet matches. Cabin height is 5 feet 5 inches, cabin length is 13 feet 6 inches, configured as six seats in a club-four plus two forward side-facing arrangement, or as a five-seat layout with an additional forward console.

The seats themselves are premium Beechcraft-standard: full leather, fully-tracking, deep and comfortable, with individually-controlled reading lights and USB outlets at every position. Many airframes have received cabin refits in the past decade, with contemporary interior schemes bringing the aircraft up to current visual standards.

The Premier IA carries a fully-enclosed aft lavatory with vanity and sink — genuinely usable on longer sectors, a meaningful improvement over the M2/Mustang/Eclipse curtained arrangement. Forward, a proper refreshment centre supports hot beverage service and cold catering.

Baggage capacity totals 77 cubic feet in an external aft compartment, which is one of the largest external baggage holds in the light-jet class and a genuine practical advantage over the internal-only Mustang or M2 layouts. Skis and golf bags load without any interior repositioning.

The Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 flight deck is single-pilot certified, LPV-capable and ADS-B compliant. Wi-Fi is typically Gogo ATG-4 or ATG-5000 where fitted; Ka-band installations are rare due to airframe constraints.

Performance, range and runway access

Two Williams FJ44-2A turbofans producing 2,300 lbf each give the Premier IA a maximum cruise of 461 knots true (Mach 0.80) and a normal cruise of Mach 0.74. That is faster than every current VLJ, faster than the CJ3+, and essentially at parity with the Phenom 300 in high-speed cruise. Certified ceiling is FL410.

NBAA IFR range with four passengers is 1,500 nautical miles. Practical missions: Teterboro to Nassau, LA to Aspen, Chicago to Naples FL, Dallas to Aspen, Miami to Charleston. Long transcontinental legs require a fuel stop with a full cabin.

Runway performance is genuinely useful: take-off field length is 3,792 ft, landing distance is 3,170 ft. That opens Aspen (with hot-and-high considerations), Sun Valley, Nantucket, Palma, Ibiza and most European regional fields, though not Lugano, Sion or London City steep-approach.

Fuel burn is competitive at 150 US gallons per hour in cruise — meaningfully lower than the Hawker 400XP delivering similar range, and only modestly higher than the Phenom 300. Direct operating cost sits around $1,500–$1,850 per flight hour excluding capital.

Signature missions and best routes

The Premier IA's natural charter missions are two-to-three-hour US regional flights where its wide cabin makes a meaningful difference on the group's arrival experience and where its Williams-powered speed matches or beats every other light jet. Teterboro to Chicago, Dallas to Denver, LA to Sun Valley, Miami to Nassau, Boston to Charleston, Chicago to Naples FL.

A second cluster of missions plays to the aircraft's baggage capacity: skiing trips (LA to Aspen, Denver to Vail, Boston to Stowe), golf trips (Teterboro to Kiawah, Chicago to Naples FL) and family Caribbean travel (Miami to Cayman, Palm Beach to Nassau). No other light jet loads skis and golf as easily.

In Europe, the Premier IA is a rarer sight but useful for the same missions: London to Nice with skis, Zurich to Ibiza with family luggage, Munich to Olbia in high season. Availability is the main constraint — most European Premier IAs sit with a small number of German and Swiss operators.

Operating economics and charter pricing

Charter rates for the Premier IA typically fall between $3,200 and $4,200 per hour in North America and €3,500–€4,500 in Europe — 10–20 percent below a Phenom 300 or CJ3+ despite delivering a wider cabin. Indicative all-inclusive one-way pricing: Teterboro to Charleston from $8,900; Dallas to Aspen from $9,800; LA to Las Vegas from $6,900; Chicago to Naples FL from $12,400; Miami to Nassau from $5,400.

Empty-leg availability is moderate — Premier IAs cluster in US operators with a strong bias toward Texas, Florida and the Northeast. European availability is thinner. Flexible clients can typically find one-way relocation legs at 40–55 percent of confirmed pricing.

Operating economics benefit from the aircraft's out-of-production status — capital charges are lower than a new light jet, and Williams FJ44 support remains excellent with the same engine family used across the entire CJ range. Direct operating cost of $1,500–$1,850 per flight hour is broadly comparable to the CJ3+.

How the Premier IA compares

Against the Citation CJ3+, the Premier IA offers 8 inches of extra cabin width and larger external baggage, at essentially the same range, similar speed and 10–15 percent lower typical charter cost. The CJ3+ wins on cabin height (fractionally), on service network depth and on modern avionics generation. Choose Premier IA for wide cabin and baggage; choose CJ3+ for polish and availability.

Against the Phenom 300E, the Premier IA gives up range (1,500 nm vs 2,010 nm), gives up cabin altitude (Phenom is quieter and cooler at FL450) and gives up modern cabin design at 10–20 percent lower cost and a fractionally wider cabin. On a two-hour US regional mission the Premier IA is a genuinely competitive choice; on a longer or more contemporary itinerary the Phenom pulls away.

Against the Hawker 400XP, the Premier IA has a modestly wider and taller cabin, meaningfully better fuel burn, better avionics and a more contemporary interior at comparable rates. Unless the group needs the 400XP's seven-seat capacity, the Premier IA is the better tool.

Against a Learjet 40XR or 45XR, the Premier IA offers a much wider cabin (5'6" vs 5'1"), a genuine external baggage hold and single-pilot certification, at broadly comparable rates. Learjets win on cruise altitude (FL510) and speed (Mach 0.81) for long transcontinental legs; Premier IA wins on cabin experience.

Verdict: who should charter the Premier IA?

The Beechcraft Premier IA is the right aircraft for four to six passengers on two-to-three-hour missions who prioritise cabin width, baggage capacity and single-pilot economics over long range or hot-and-high runway access. Its natural clients are US regional executives, family groups on ski or golf trips who load real luggage, and cost-conscious charter clients who want a materially wider cabin than a Citation CJ or Phenom 300 offers.

It is not the right aircraft for intercontinental missions, for cabins bigger than six seats, or for clients who require the newest possible avionics and connectivity generation. It is also constrained in Europe by thin operator base — availability is what will most often push a Limitless Sky quote toward the Phenom 300 or CJ3+ alternatives.

Limitless Sky sources the Premier IA through partner Part 135 operators in the US and a small European operator network. Contact charter@thelimitlesssky.com with your intended sectors — for four passengers with real luggage on a US regional mission, the Premier IA is often the quiet best-value answer.

WHO SHOULD CHARTER THIS

Why choose the Beechcraft Premier IA?

The right client profile for the IA: 6 passengers, missions inside its 1,500 nm range, and routes where the light jet cabin size is the sweet spot between cost and comfort.

  • Only all-composite light jet in production
  • Widest cabin in class
  • Single-pilot certified

RANGE & LIMITATIONS

What the IA can — and can't — do

Non-stop range

1,500 nm with typical payload. Missions beyond this figure require a technical fuel stop — expect 30–45 minutes on the ground and a modest re-quote. On strong headwinds or full-cabin days the practical range trims by 5–10%.

Runway requirement

Balanced-field length around 3,792 ft. Rules out very short-strip airfields (Courchevel, Lugano, London City steep-approach) unless the airframe is specifically certified — our ops team validates every airport pairing before we confirm the quote.

Payload & baggage

77 cu ft of hold space with 6 passengers. Ski, golf and dive equipment fit for most parties; larger groups with full luggage should size up one category to preserve the range figure above.

Purchase price band

The €1.23m€1.83m band is an indicative pre-owned range for a well-maintained, mid-life Beechcraft Premier IA on a current maintenance and engine programme, in a typical European charter specification. It is built from published asking prices and retail transaction ranges (Duncan Aviation market letters, AvBuyer and Controller listings, VREF and Aircraft Bluebook retail guidance), then narrowed against what our desk sees pay-and-close in Europe. The model uses a single point inside that band, €1,500,000, so the five-year output is reproducible. Serial number, total time, cycles, engine-programme enrolment, avionics mandates, interior age and import/VAT status routinely move a real transaction outside the band in either direction.

Fixed cost assumptions

€280,000 a year covers two (or, for larger cabins, three) crew with training and recurrent sim, hangarage at a European base, hull and liability insurance, the management fee on a third-party AOC, navigation and weather subscriptions, and scheduled non-flying charges. It excludes financing, tax, extraordinary maintenance events and cabin refurbishment. Sources are operator and management-company budget templates for the type, cross-checked against NBAA and Conklin & de Decker fixed-cost structures.

Direct operating cost per hour

€1,200 per aircraft hour is fuel at prevailing European Jet A-1 pricing, engine and airframe programme accruals, APU and landing-gear reserves, landing, handling and navigation fees, catering and crew expenses. It is applied to actual aircraft hours, not occupied hours: owner trips carry a 15% positioning uplift and third-party charter carries 20%, which is what repositioning empty legs cost in practice.

Charter revenue estimate

140 third-party occupied hours a year at a wholesale base rate of €2,800 per hour is what a managed Beechcraft Premier IA realistically sells in Europe once owner availability, maintenance downtime and seasonality are taken out — not the retail rate a client pays. The rate is the operator-level rate band we transact at on Avinode and directly with operators; the owner keeps 85% under a standard management agreement, with the balance retained by the operator. Ferry, fuel surcharges, de-icing and overnights on charter missions are captured in the direct-cost line rather than netted off the rate.

Depreciation and the five-year frame

22% market depreciation is applied over a 5-year hold, with 2% acquisition costs (inspection, legal, delivery) at entry and 3% selling costs at exit. Owner utilisation is held at 100 occupied hours a year across every aircraft so types can be compared like for like. Capital opportunity cost is shown separately at 4% simple per year and is not added into the cash cost. The same frame drives our ownership vs charter vs fractional analysis and the most profitable jets to own ranking, so the three never disagree.

Review cadence

Values are reviewed each quarter against the same sources and re-published in one dataset, so every aircraft page moves together. Read our editorial standards for how we source and correct figures.

Indicative planning estimates prepared by the Limitless Sky desk — not an appraisal, charter quotation, offer or tax advice. Figures are pre-tax and pre-financing and exclude recoverable VAT, extraordinary maintenance and substitute lift during downtime. Actual values depend on serial number, hours, maintenance and engine-programme status, specification, base and charter demand.
