CHARTER BUYER'S GUIDE
Davos, a name synonymous with global dialogue and pristine Alpine beauty, transforms annually into a nexus of economic and political thought during the World Economic Forum (WEF). Beyond this signature event, however, Davos offers a compelling proposition for the private jet traveller seeking exclusive winter sports, serene summer retreats, or a discreet base for exploring the Grisons canton. Set in the Landwasser valley in the Swiss Alps, it is one of the highest towns in Europe, ensuring consistent snow conditions and breathtaking vistas. Its dual identity as a high-altitude health resort and a world-class conference destination means infrastructure is robust, catering to a discerning international clientele.
For the private aviation enthusiast, understanding the nuances of arrival, ground transfer, and local amenities is paramount, especially during peak seasons. The demand during the WEF, for instance, is unparalleled, pushing the capacities of surrounding airports and ground transportation networks to their absolute limit. Consequently, forward planning, flexibility, and an acute awareness of operational constraints become crucial for a seamless experience. This guide aims to demystify the complexities of private jet travel to Davos, offering practical advice and insider knowledge to ensure your journey is as smooth and enjoyable as the destination itself.
Davos itself does not have an airport capable of handling private jets. Instead, access is facilitated via several international and regional airports, each offering distinct advantages and challenges, particularly concerning transfer times and FBO services. The selection of your arrival airport will largely depend on the time of year, your tolerance for ground transfer, and the operational flexibility required.
Zurich Airport (ZRH)
By far the most common entry point for those travelling to Davos, Zurich Airport is Switzerland's largest international airport and a major hub for private aviation. It is located approximately 150 kilometres (93 miles) northwest of Davos, a journey that typically takes around 2 to 2.5 hours by car, depending on traffic and road conditions. During the WEF, this transfer time can extend considerably.
Samedan Airport (St. Moritz) (SMV)
Also known as Engadin Airport, Samedan is Europe's highest airport, nestled in the stunning Engadin valley. It is located approximately 70 kilometres (43 miles) south of Davos, with a scenic drive that typically takes around 1.5 hours. While closer than Zurich, SMV presents its own unique operational challenges.
Friedrichshafen Airport (FDH) / Altenrhein Airport (ACH)
These two airports, located on or near the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee), offer alternative entry points, particularly useful when ZRH and SMV are at peak capacity or for travellers approaching from Germany or Austria.
During high-demand periods like the WEF, all these airports operate under significant pressure. It is highly advisable to work with your charter broker well in advance to secure slots, parking, and ground transportation. Be prepared for the possibility of repositioning your aircraft to a more distant airport after dropping off passengers at your chosen arrival point.
Once on the ground, efficient and comfortable transfer to Davos is crucial. The mountainous terrain and potential for winter weather dictate the mode and timing of your onward journey.
Private Car Service:
This is the most popular and recommended option for private jet travellers. Reputable chauffeur services offer luxury vehicles (Mercedes S-Class, V-Class, various SUVs) equipped for winter conditions (e.g., 4x4, winter tyres). Pre-booking is essential, especially during the WEF, when demand far outstrips supply. Expect chauffeur-driven sedans to cost between CHF 800-1200 for a one-way transfer from Zurich to Davos, with prices potentially higher during peak periods. From Samedan, expect CHF 400-700. Journey times are as follows:
Your charter broker or FBO can arrange trusted ground transportation partners. Always confirm the vehicle type, whether it's equipped for snow, and if the driver is familiar with the mountainous routes to Davos.
Helicopter Transfer:
For the ultimate in speed and convenience, particularly during the WEF, helicopter transfers are an option. Helicopters can significantly reduce transfer times, cutting the journey from Zurich to approximately 30-40 minutes. However, this comes at a considerable cost (typically CHF 4,000-8,000 one-way from ZRH) and is subject to strict weather limitations. Landing zones in Davos are limited; some hotels may have private helipads, or arrangements can be made for transfers to designated public landing areas. During the WEF, helicopter movements are heavily regulated, and slots are extremely competitive. Check with your operator for feasibility and availability.
Train:
The Swiss rail network is renowned for its punctuality and scenic routes. While less popular for private jet clients due to baggage and privacy considerations, it remains a viable and picturesque option. A direct train from Zurich Hauptbahnhof (main station) to Davos Platz takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, involving one change at Landquart. From Samedan, the journey involves a change in Filisur and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. While significantly cheaper than private transfers, the logistics of getting from the airport to the train station with luggage can be cumbersome. First-class tickets offer more comfort.
Davos is broadly divided into two main sections: Davos Platz and Davos Dorf. Both offer a range of accommodation and amenities, catering to different preferences.
Davos Platz:
This is the larger and more central of the two, home to the main train station (Davos Platz), the majority of shops, restaurants, and the Congress Centre where the WEF is held. It is the more vibrant and bustling area, particularly during peak seasons. Many of the larger, more established hotels are located here, offering direct access to the town's facilities. The Schatzalp funicular is also accessible from Davos Platz.
Davos Dorf:
Located to the northeast of Davos Platz, Davos Dorf is slightly quieter and more residential. It offers direct access to the Parsenn ski area via the Parsennbahn funicular. It has its own train station (Davos Dorf) and a good selection of hotels and restaurants. For those prioritising ski-in/ski-out access or a slightly more tranquil atmosphere while remaining close to the action, Davos Dorf is an excellent choice.
Luxury Hotels (see Lifestyle Descriptions for detail):
Given the high demand, especially during winter and the WEF, securing accommodation requires booking well in advance. During the WEF, hotel rates skyrocket, and minimum stay requirements are common. Many companies and delegations block-book entire hotels, making individual reservations extremely challenging.
Davos offers a wealth of activities, primarily centred around its stunning Alpine environment. While winter sports dominate, the summer months provide ample opportunities for hiking, cycling, and enjoying the fresh mountain air.

Other Attractions:
Davos offers a diverse culinary scene, ranging from traditional Swiss fare to international fine dining, often with spectacular views. Nightlife is generally relaxed, with a few notable exceptions during the WEF.

Nightlife:
Davos's nightlife is typically low-key outside of the WEF. Most activity revolves around hotel bars and a few local pubs.
During the WEF, the entire town transforms. Many restaurants are booked out for private events, and impromptu pop-up venues and exclusive parties are common. Securing dinner reservations during this period requires significant advance planning, often through hotel concierge services or dedicated event planners.
Davos experiences distinct seasons, each offering a different atmosphere and impacting pricing for flights, accommodation, and services.
Winter Season (December - April):
This is Davos's peak season, driven by winter sports and, crucially, the World Economic Forum.
Summer Season (June - September):
The green season offers a quieter, more relaxed experience, with opportunities for hiking, biking, and outdoor pursuits. Prices are significantly lower than in winter.
Shoulder Seasons (May, October, November):
These months are generally quiet, with some lifts closed for maintenance and a transition between seasons. Expect the lowest prices for accommodation and services. While some consider it "off-season," it can be an excellent time for secluded relaxation or business travel outside of the major events, with minimal crowds.
Pricing for Private Jet Charter:
The base price for a private jet charter to an airport serving Davos (e.g., Zurich) varies significantly by aircraft type, availability, and demand. During normal periods, a light jet from London could range from £8,000-£15,000, a midsize jet £15,000-£25,000, and a heavy jet £25,000+. During the WEF, these figures can increase by 50-150% or more due to unprecedented demand for aircraft, crew, airport slots, and FBO services. Empty leg opportunities are rare during peak events.
By meticulously planning and leveraging the insights provided, your private jet journey to Davos can be as refined and efficient as the destination itself, whether for high-stakes conferences or serene Alpine escapism.
