OVERVIEW

Gulfstream G280

The Gulfstream G280 is the segment-leading super-midsize — 3,600 nm of nonstop range, a stand-up flat-floor cabin and the same finish quality as the larger G500/G600. Capable of Teterboro–London with a tailwind.

IN DEPTH

The complete guide to chartering the Gulfstream G280

The story behind the Gulfstream G280

The Gulfstream G280 replaced the G200 in 2012 as Gulfstream's super-midsize offering — a comprehensive redesign built in cooperation with Israel Aerospace Industries and finished in Dallas. The G280 shares almost no parts with the G200; it introduced a new supercritical wing, more powerful Honeywell HTF7250G engines, Gulfstream's PlaneView 280 avionics (a variant of the flagship G550/G650 flight deck) and a purpose-designed cabin with 100 per cent fresh-air ventilation and a 7,000 ft cabin altitude at FL450.

Around 200 examples have been built to date. The G280 sits in the upper price and performance tier of the super-midsize class alongside the Praetor 600 and Challenger 3500, and is the natural choice for clients who want Gulfstream's brand, service network and cabin philosophy but do not need a full G500 or G650.

For charter the G280 is a premium super-midsize option, typically priced at a modest premium to the Longitude and Challenger 350, with a Gulfstream cabin experience that many operators consider the class benchmark for materials quality and cabin altitude comfort.

On board: the Gulfstream cabin philosophy

The G280 cabin is 25 feet 10 inches long, 7 feet 2 inches wide and 6 feet 3 inches tall — dimensionally competitive with the Longitude and the widest in the class alongside the G200. Standard layout is a nine-passenger double-club with an aft three-place divan; some deliveries add a forward crew rest jump seat. Seats are Gulfstream's own design, full-recline and tracking, with a build quality that visibly exceeds the class norm.

Cabin altitude at FL450 is 7,000 ft — competitive with the Longitude (5,950 ft) but not class-leading (Praetor 600 and Challenger 3500 both hit 5,800 ft). Gulfstream's 100 per cent fresh-air ventilation system replaces the entire cabin volume every two minutes, and passengers routinely report arriving less fatigued from a G280 than from peers.

Baggage volume is 120 cubic feet in a heated aft hold accessed externally, with additional in-cabin space forward. The lavatory is fully enclosed with vanity, and the galley is forward-right with hot and cold storage and an espresso machine on most operators. Ka-band Wi-Fi is standard from delivery on late-production aircraft.

Performance

Twin Honeywell HTF7250G engines deliver 7,624 pounds of thrust each. Maximum operating Mach is 0.85; long-range cruise Mach 0.80. Certified ceiling is FL450. NBAA IFR range with four passengers is 3,600 nautical miles — enough for London to New York (with reserves and favourable winds year-round), Los Angeles to Honolulu, London to Dubai, or coast-to-coast US with wind margin.

Balanced field length at MTOW is 4,750 ft — one of the best figures in the super-midsize category and dramatically better than the G200. Landing distance is 2,720 ft, opening up steep-approach and short-runway airports the G200 could never access. The G280 is genuinely runway-flexible.

Steep-approach certification allows London City operations at reduced weight, and hot-and-high performance is competitive — a G280 out of Aspen or Telluride at typical charter weights performs comparably to a Challenger 350.

Missions, economics and comparison

Charter hourly rates run $9,000–$11,000 in North America; €9,500–€11,500 in Europe. Empty-leg availability is moderate. Indicative pricing: New York to London from $85,000; London to Dubai from £65,000; New York to Los Angeles from $50,000; Aspen to New York from $32,000.

Against the Praetor 600 the G280 gives up some transatlantic range (3,600 vs 4,018 nm) and cabin altitude, wins on Gulfstream service network and brand cachet. Against the Challenger 3500 the G280 offers longer range and comparable cabin size. Against the Longitude the G280 offers slightly longer range and a more polished cabin at 10–15 per cent higher cost.

The G280 is the Gulfstream buyer's super-midsize choice. Charter clients pay a modest premium for the brand, the cabin, and the confidence of the world's largest business-jet service network.

Verdict

Charter the G280 when Gulfstream brand and service network matter to the client, when the mission is 2,500–3,600 nm with six to nine passengers, and when runway flexibility and cabin altitude comfort are decisive. It is the most complete super-midsize choice on the market for clients unwilling to compromise on any single axis.

Prefer the Praetor 600 for genuine transatlantic range or the Challenger 3500 for the newest cabin experience. Prefer the Longitude for lower operating cost on comparable missions. For Gulfstream loyalists and clients who want the class's most polished all-round product, however, the G280 is the aircraft.

WHO SHOULD CHARTER THIS

Why choose the Gulfstream G280?

The right client profile for the G280: 8–10 passengers, missions inside its 3,600 nm range, and routes where the super-midsize jet cabin size is the sweet spot between cost and comfort.

  • Longest range in super-midsize class
  • Steep-approach certified (London City capable airframe operations)
  • 100% fresh-air cabin

RANGE & LIMITATIONS

What the G280 can — and can't — do

Non-stop range

3,600 nm with typical payload. Missions beyond this figure require a technical fuel stop — expect 30–45 minutes on the ground and a modest re-quote. On strong headwinds or full-cabin days the practical range trims by 5–10%.

Runway requirement

Balanced-field length around 4,750 ft. Rules out very short-strip airfields (Courchevel, Lugano, London City steep-approach) unless the airframe is specifically certified — our ops team validates every airport pairing before we confirm the quote.

Payload & baggage

120 cu ft of hold space with 8–10 passengers. Ski, golf and dive equipment fit for most parties; larger groups with full luggage should size up one category to preserve the range figure above.
