Private Jet to Hawaii: How to Fly Private to the Islands

How to fly a private jet to Hawaii: which jets can fly nonstop from the West Coast, Honolulu vs Maui, Kona and Lihue, flight times, one-way prices and Hawaii pet rules.

BY MARCUS WHITFIELD · USA · 9 MIN READ · OCTOBER 16, 2026

Hawaii is a domestic trip with the planning profile of an ocean crossing. From Los Angeles to Honolulu the great-circle sector is 2,217 nm, nearly all of it over open water, with no airport to divert to along the way. That one fact decides most of the trip: which aircraft can fly it, what the operator must carry, and why the price looks more like New York–Los Angeles than a weekend hop. The good news is that the arrival end is simple. Every major island has a long runway, private terminals and no customs queue for mainland flights. This is how we plan a Hawaii charter on the desk.

The short answer

From the West Coast, plan on super-midsize or larger. On our route data, light jets can't cover the sector nonstop after reserves, and the modelled options start at a Challenger 300-class super-midsize. Typical block time is about 5 h 15 min from San Francisco and about 5 h 35 min from Los Angeles to Honolulu, with indicative one-way prices of roughly €20,000–€46,000 all-in, depending on aircraft and dates.

Fly into Honolulu (HNL) for Oahu, Kahului (OGG) for Maui, Kona (KOA) for the Big Island resorts, or Lihue (LIH) for Kauai. Send us your origin, island, dates, passengers, bags and any pets, and we come back with all-inclusive options in about 10 minutes, 24/7.

Which Hawaii airport should you fly into?

Each major island has an airport that takes business jets. Runway and hours figures below come from FAA airport data.

How we choose:

  • Honolulu takes every class we charter, including ultra-long-range jets, and is the only airport where Hawaii's direct airport release for pets works without a separate neighbour-island permit (more on that below).
  • Kona is the long-runway option for the Kohala Coast resorts. At 11,000 ft it takes heavy jets comfortably. FAA remarks require prior permission from the airport manager for transient parking, which we request at booking.
  • Maui (OGG) is closest for Wailea and Kaanapali, but at 6,998 ft its main runway is much shorter than Honolulu's or Kona's for a full-fuel jet. On our route data, it suits midsize and super-midsize jets best, and heavy and ultra-long-range jets need payload and fuel planning for a nonstop from the mainland. If the cabin you want is a heavy jet, landing at Kona or Honolulu and hopping across can be the better plan.
  • Kauai (LIH) has two 6,500 ft runways. FAA remarks require prior permission for parking for all transient aircraft, so we treat it as an "arrange in advance" airport.
  • Kapalua (JHM) on West Maui is a private-use field with a 3,000 ft runway and isn't a jet option.

Which private jets can fly to Hawaii nonstop?

Range is the deciding question. The sectors from the West Coast run from about 2,030 nm to 2,330 nm, and the aircraft also has to carry IFR reserves for a crossing with no alternate airport en route.

  • Light jets (Phenom 300, Citation CJ3+): not nonstop. Our route models rule them out after reserves.
  • Midsize jets: most classic midsize jets (for example the Citation XLS+ or Hawker 900XP) don't have the range with sensible reserves. A few longer-range midsize designs can do it with a light load, so we check the specific aircraft rather than the category.
  • Super-midsize jets (Challenger 300/350, Praetor 600): the usual value choice. On our Los Angeles–Honolulu data, a Challenger 300 has range headroom on the 2,217 nm sector.
  • Heavy and ultra-long-range jets (Falcon 7X, Global 5000, Gulfstream G650): more cabin, more baggage and more margin on a headwind day. On LA–Honolulu, a Global 5000 saves roughly 27 minutes of block time against the smallest eligible class on our data.

Winds matter more here than on most domestic routes. The westbound leg to the islands is usually the longer one, and the operator plans the fuel for the actual winds on the day.

What "extended overwater" means for your charter

US rules define an extended overwater operation as flying more than 50 nautical miles from the nearest shoreline (14 CFR 1.1). For on-demand charter operators, 14 CFR 135.167 then requires, among other things, an approved life preserver with a locator light for every occupant, life rafts with enough capacity for everyone on board, and a survival-type emergency locator transmitter attached to one of the rafts.

In practice, this means not every aircraft on a charter certificate is set up and approved for the crossing. We confirm the operator's overwater approval and equipment for the specific tail number before we confirm the trip, and the crew gives a ditching-equipment briefing before departure.

Flight times and indicative prices

These figures come from our live route pages. They're indicative one-way, all-in ranges, and the final quote depends on dates, aircraft position and the return plan.

RouteDistanceTypical block timeIndicative one-way, all-in
San Francisco → Honolulu2,083 nm~5 h 15 min€20,000–€43,000
Los Angeles → Honolulu2,217 nm~5 h 35 min€21,000–€46,000
San Francisco → Maui2,031 nm~5 h 10 min€19,000–€42,000
Los Angeles → Maui2,157 nm~5 h 25 min€20,000–€45,000

Some aircraft examples from those pages:

  • Los Angeles–Honolulu: Challenger 300 about €23,600, Global 5000 about €39,900.
  • San Francisco–Honolulu: Challenger 300 about €22,300, Global 5000 about €37,600.
  • Los Angeles–Maui: Challenger 300 about €23,000.
  • San Francisco–Maui: Challenger 300 about €21,700.

For hourly context, our cost-per-hour guide puts super-midsize jets at $7,500–$9,500 per hour, heavy jets at $9,500–$13,000 per hour and ultra-long-range jets at $13,000–$20,000+ per hour. From Seattle the great-circle distance to Honolulu is about 2,330 nm, so expect a similar aircraft shortlist with a little less margin. We quote it on request.

One-way, round trip, or the aircraft stays?

On a five-hour ocean sector, what the aircraft does after it drops you off matters more than the hourly rate:

  1. The aircraft stays. Good for short trips. You pay crew accommodation and parking on the island, but nobody flies empty.
  2. The aircraft goes home and comes back. Better for longer stays, but it adds two empty ocean crossings, which we price openly.
  3. Two one-ways. If a return charter or empty leg lines up, a separate return can be cheaper. If no return charter is available, the empty flight home is built into a one-way quote.

Island hopping by private jet

Once you're in Hawaii, the distances are short. By great-circle distance, Honolulu is about 87 nm from Maui (OGG), 88 nm from Kauai (LIH) and 142 nm from Kona. Maui to Kona is about 73 nm. Those are short hops, often well under an hour in the air.

A light jet or turboprop is usually the efficient choice between the islands. The long-range jet that brought you across can do the hop too, but you pay its hourly rate for every minute. If you're combining islands, tell us up front: landing the big jet at Honolulu or Kona and hopping by a smaller aircraft to Maui or Kauai can widen your aircraft choice on the long leg.

Arrival: no customs, but an agricultural declaration

From the US mainland, there's no customs or immigration. It's a domestic flight. What Hawaii does require is its Plants and Animals Declaration. Under Hawaii law (HRS §150A-5), all passengers, officers and crew arriving from the continental US complete the declaration, whether or not they're carrying restricted items. One adult can complete it for family members. Fruit, plants, flowers, soil and live animals must be declared and inspected. We tell you before departure what to leave at home, and the crew and FBO handle the paperwork on arrival.

Arriving from abroad? Your first US landing needs customs. On FAA data, HNL, OGG, KOA, LIH and ITO are all listed as customs landing-rights airports, and HNL requires two hours' advance notice outside regular business hours. The operator files the passenger manifest and customs request. We collect passport details before the flight.

Flying to Hawaii with your dog or cat

Hawaii is rabies-free, and its quarantine rules apply to every dog and cat, on a private jet the same as on an airline. This is where Hawaii trips most often go wrong, so start early.

From the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity's published rules:

  • Dogs and cats that meet the 5 Day Or Less requirements can qualify for direct airport release in Honolulu after inspection. Animals that don't meet them can be quarantined for up to 120 days.
  • The requirements include two rabies vaccinations and a passing OIE-FAVN rabies antibody test, with at least 30 days between the passing test and arrival, and at least 30 days after the most recent vaccination. The department warns that FAVN results can currently take one to two months.
  • Documents should reach the Animal Quarantine Station 10 days or more before arrival. The published fee for direct airport release in Honolulu is $185 per animal, rising to $244 when documents arrive late.
  • Honolulu airport inspections run 08:30–16:30 daily, and the department advises arriving by 15:30. Pets that arrive later are held overnight.
  • To release a pet directly at Kona, Kahului or Lihue, you need a Neighbor Island Inspection Permit ($165), with documents received 30 days or more before arrival and an inspection booked with an approved veterinary clinic on that island. Without it, a pet can be sent to Honolulu for inspection.

For a private flight, we build the arrival time around the inspection window and make sure the operator, FBO and quarantine staff know the animal is on board. We plan the timeline backwards from the FAVN test date, often months before the trip.

Timing and empty legs

Demand runs on two calendars: West Coast families during school holidays and the year-end period, and winter sun from colder markets. Our route pages show demand on the main West Coast corridors as broadly steady year-round, but the holiday weeks are when the long-range fleet is most committed. Book those early.

Empty legs to and from the islands appear less often than on short mainland routes because fewer aircraft position across the Pacific. When one lines up, it can be well below the on-demand fare. Our cost guide puts empty-leg pricing typically 25–75% below the hourly rates.

  1. Get an on-demand quote so you have a firm Plan A.
  2. Set an empty-leg alert for Honolulu or Maui in both directions, or run a quick AI empty-leg search.
  3. If a matching leg appears in your window, we confirm the operator, the exact aircraft and the all-in price before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Can a private jet fly to Hawaii nonstop?
Yes, if it has the range. On our route data, super-midsize jets such as the Challenger 300 fly Los Angeles–Honolulu (2,217 nm) nonstop, and heavy and ultra-long-range jets add cabin space and margin. Light jets can't make the crossing nonstop after reserves.
How long is a private jet flight to Hawaii?
About 5 h 15 min of block time from San Francisco to Honolulu and about 5 h 35 min from Los Angeles, on our route pages. Maui is slightly shorter from both. Winds on the day move the exact time.
How much does a private jet to Hawaii cost?
Our route pages show Los Angeles–Honolulu at about €21,000–€46,000 one-way all-in and San Francisco–Honolulu at about €20,000–€43,000, with Challenger 300 examples around €22,000–€24,000. What the aircraft does during your stay is the biggest swing factor in a round trip.
Which airport should I use on Maui?
Kahului (OGG), which has a 6,998 ft main runway and two FBOs. It suits midsize and super-midsize jets best. Heavy jets need payload planning, so a heavy-jet trip may land at Kona or Honolulu and hop across. Kapalua (JHM) isn't a jet airport.
Can I fly my dog to Hawaii on a private jet?
Yes, but Hawaii's rabies rules still apply. To avoid quarantine of up to 120 days, your dog needs to qualify for the 5 Day Or Less program, including a passing FAVN test at least 30 days before arrival. Direct release is in Honolulu, or at Kona, Kahului or Lihue with a Neighbor Island Inspection Permit.
Do I go through customs flying private from the mainland to Hawaii?
No. It's a domestic flight, so there's no customs or immigration. Everyone on board completes Hawaii's Plants and Animals Declaration, and agricultural items and animals are inspected.
