Private Jet to Bermuda: How to Fly Private to L.F. Wade International (BDA)

How to fly a private jet to Bermuda: about 680 nm from New York, which jets suit the trip, what it costs, the single FBO at BDA, the charter permit, arrival card and pet rules.

BY MARCUS WHITFIELD · USA · 8 MIN READ · OCTOBER 21, 2026

Bermuda is one of the shortest international private flights from the US East Coast. From Teterboro it's about 680 nautical miles, roughly the distance from New York to Chicago, and the whole island is served by a single airport with a long runway and a single private-aviation terminal. The planning is less about aircraft range and more about the details that are specific to Bermuda: an open-ocean crossing, a charter permit from the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority, an airport that closes overnight, and strict rules for pets. This is how we plan a Bermuda charter on the desk.

The short answer

You land at L.F. Wade International (BDA / TXKF) in St. George's Parish and clear customs and immigration in the private terminal run by Atlantic Aviation. From New York or Boston (about 670–680 nm), a light jet has the range with plenty to spare, and a midsize jet adds cabin space. From Miami (about 900 nm) and Toronto (about 980 nm), light and midsize jets are still well within range. From London (about 2,970 nm), a heavy or ultra-long-range jet is the comfortable nonstop choice.

Every visitor completes the free Bermuda Arrival Card, the charter operator holds a BCAA Foreign Operator Permit, and the airport is closed to normal traffic overnight, so late arrivals need planning. Send us your dates, passengers, bags and any pets, and you get an estimated price per aircraft class straight away, then two or three confirmed options within 1–2 hours, 24/7.

Where you land: L.F. Wade International (BDA)

L.F. Wade is the only airport in Bermuda. The Bermuda AIP places it 6 NM north-east of Hamilton, and it has one runway, 12/30, 9,705 ft × 150 ft (2,958 m × 46 m), at 18 ft elevation. Runway length doesn't limit any business jet we charter.

Atlantic Aviation took over Cedar Aviation Services at BDA in December 2025. It describes a 6,440 sq ft executive terminal with a conference room, and concierge help with cars, catering and hotels. Handling requests are due at least 48 hours before the flight, and requests made later carry a surcharge. Flights after 18:00 local also carry an overtime charge. That's why we lock in arrival times early, especially for Friday-evening departures from New York.

Which private jets suit a Bermuda trip?

Range is rarely the question from North America. The open ocean is.

  • From New York, Boston or Washington (about 670–740 nm): every jet class has the range. A light jet such as a Phenom 300 (published range about 2,010 nm on our aircraft pages) does it comfortably. Choose midsize or larger for cabin height, more bags or a larger group.
  • From Miami or Palm Beach (about 870–900 nm): light and midsize jets fly it nonstop.
  • From Toronto (about 980 nm): light and midsize jets fly it nonstop, and a midsize cabin is usually the more comfortable choice.
  • From London (about 2,970 nm): heavy and ultra-long-range jets fly it nonstop. Whether a smaller cabin can make it without a stop depends on westbound winds, passengers and bags, and the operator confirms that for the specific aircraft.

Ocean equipment. Atlantic Aviation's operating guidelines for Bermuda say every aircraft needs an HF radio to talk to New York Center on arrival and departure, with no exceptions, and ACAS II (TCAS II version 7.1) has been mandatory since 1 April 2023. Not every light jet on the market carries HF, so we check the equipment of the specific tail before we offer it to you.

Flight times

Bermuda doesn't yet have fixed route tables on our site, so these are estimates from great-circle distance and typical cruise speeds. Winds, routing and the aircraft change the final block time.

What a private jet to Bermuda costs

The honest starting point is our published hourly rates. From our cost-per-hour guide, 2026 retail rates run:

ClassTypical aircraftHourly rate (USD)
Light jetPhenom 300, Citation CJ3+$3,500–$5,500
Midsize jetHawker 900XP, Citation XLS+$5,500–$7,500
Super-midsizeChallenger 350, Praetor 600$7,500–$9,500
Heavy jetFalcon 7X, Challenger 605$9,500–$13,000
Ultra-long-rangeGulfstream G650, Global 7500$13,000–$20,000+

As a worked example, New York to Bermuda is about 2 flight hours in a light jet, so roughly $7,000–$11,000 of flight time at those rates. That's not a quote. A one-way charter usually also carries the aircraft's empty flight home, and international handling, customs and permits are billed on top, so the final number depends on where the aircraft is based, your dates and the return plan. Our Bermuda destination page gives an estimate per aircraft class for your dates.

The Bermuda charter permit also has a published fee. The BCAA charges $500 for a single-aircraft Foreign Operator Permit, which covers both the arrival and the departure. The operator pays it and it's included in an all-inclusive quote.

One-way, round trip, or the aircraft stays?

Because the flight is short, the return plan often matters more than the flight itself:

  1. Day trip or short stay. For a meeting in Hamilton or a long weekend, the aircraft waits for you. You pay crew accommodation and parking, but nobody flies empty.
  2. The aircraft goes home and comes back. Better for a week or more. It adds two empty sectors of about two hours each from New York, which we price openly.
  3. Two one-ways. If a return charter or an empty leg lines up, a separate return can cost less.

Arrival: permits, the Arrival Card and APIS

The paperwork for Bermuda splits between the operator and you.

What the operator handles

  • Foreign Operator Permit. Bermuda's Civil Aviation Authority requires a Foreign Operator Permit for any paid flight carrying passengers into or out of Bermuda on an aircraft not registered in the UK or a UK Overseas Territory. The BCAA asks for applications at least 48 hours before the first flight, with insurance evidence and the fee. We only work with operators that meet those requirements.
  • Night permission. The Bermuda AIP requires prior permission, requested 24 hours ahead, for take-offs between 22:00 and 07:00 or landings between 23:00 and 07:00 local on non-scheduled flights.
  • Passenger information. Bermuda Customs asks to be notified of everyone on board corporate flights: full name, nationality, date of birth, passport number and expiry. The handler collects it with the handling request.

What you do

  • Bring a passport. The Bermuda AIP lists the passport as the preferred entry document, and visitors need proof of onward travel; your return flight covers that. The Government of Bermuda notes that US passport cards can't be used to fly to Bermuda. Nationals of countries on Bermuda's visa list need a multiple re-entry visa for the UK, US or Canada, valid at least 45 days beyond the stay.
  • Complete the Bermuda Arrival Card. Every visitor arriving by air completes the free online form from the Bermuda Tourism Authority before or on arrival. Crew and transit passengers are exempt. One form per person. Use only the official government site. Bermuda Tourism warns about third-party sites that charge for it.

Flying back to the US. US Customs preclearance at BDA serves scheduled airline flights. The Bermuda AIP says it isn't normally available to private or non-scheduled operators without prior authorisation, so plan on clearing US customs at your first US landing. The operator files the US advance passenger information and secures permission to land before departure, and we pick the return airport around customs hours.

Flying to Bermuda with your dog or cat

Bermuda's pet rules are strict and detailed. From the Government of Bermuda's import conditions for dogs and cats:

  • Every animal needs an Import Permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, issued in advance. The permit is valid 10 days from the date of the veterinary health certificate, and the department says it usually responds within 2 business days. It's closed on weekends and public holidays.
  • The pet needs an ISO-readable microchip (FECAVA and AVID-USA chips are also accepted).
  • Two rabies vaccinations are required: the first at or after three months of age, the second 6–12 months later, and the most recent given at least 30 days and no more than 12 months before arrival. Dogs and cats under 10 months, or with only a single rabies vaccination, don't qualify.
  • A veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days before arrival, including treatment for external parasites with an approved product.
  • Bermuda restricts or prohibits certain dog breeds. Check the list before planning anything else.

The printed permit and the original veterinary certificates travel with the animal for Bermuda Customs. On a private flight the pet arrives with you in the cabin, but the paperwork is the same. Because the permit window is short, we time the vet visit, the application and the flight together.

On the ground

Visitors can't rent conventional cars in Bermuda. Bermuda Tourism lists taxis and two-seat electric microcars as the options, so we book a car and driver to meet you at the FBO. Hamilton is about 6 NM from the airport. The west-end resorts and the Royal Naval Dockyard are further away.

Timing, weather and empty legs

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to NOAA. Most summer trips go ahead as planned, but we keep the plan flexible for storms, and the operator checks the forecast before every departure. Bermuda's busiest stretch is the summer. Long weekends from New York and Boston book first, so ask for estimates early for July and August.

Aircraft that drop clients in Bermuda often fly back empty to the Northeast. When one lines up with your dates, it can be well below the on-demand fare. Our cost guide puts empty-leg pricing typically 25–75% below the hourly rates.

  1. Get an on-demand quote so you have a firm Plan A.
  2. Set an empty-leg alert for Bermuda in both directions, or run a quick AI empty-leg search.
  3. If a matching leg appears in your window, we confirm the operator, the exact aircraft and the all-in price before you commit.
