OVERVIEW

Gulfstream GV

The Gulfstream GV was the original ultra-long-range business jet — 6,500 nm of nonstop range that opened New York–Tokyo, London–Singapore and Los Angeles–Sydney as nonstop missions. The grandfather of every modern ULR jet.

IN DEPTH

The complete guide to chartering the Gulfstream GV

The story behind the Gulfstream V

The Gulfstream V — universally called the GV — was the aircraft that invented the ultra-long-range business jet category. Launched in 1992 and entering service in 1997, it was the first purpose-designed business jet with genuine 6,500-nautical-mile range. It won the Collier Trophy in 1997 and effectively created the market that later Globals, G550s, G650s and 7500s would compete in. Around 190 GVs were built between 1997 and 2003 before the type was replaced by the G550.

For charter clients today the GV is the value ULR — a genuinely long-range Gulfstream airframe at hourly rates well below any modern ULR jet. It suits price-conscious operators of long-haul missions where the newer cabin experience and PlaneView cockpit of a G550 are not decisive, and where the client accepts a 25-year-old airframe in exchange for materially lower cost per hour.

On board

Cabin dimensions: 42 feet 7 inches long, 7 feet 4 inches wide and 6 feet 2 inches tall — the Gulfstream widebody cross-section carried forward into the G550, G450 and G500. Standard layout is a 13–16-passenger three-zone configuration. Cabin management on original aircraft is dated Airshow 4000; refurbished GVs carry contemporary CMS retrofits with HD monitors, Bluetooth pairing and Iridium or Ka-band connectivity.

Baggage volume is 226 cubic feet, in-flight accessible from the aft cabin. The lavatory is fully enclosed with vanity and belted seat. Cabin altitude at FL450 is 6,000 ft — higher than modern ULR competitors but industry-leading in the 1997 era. A great deal of the interior experience on any given GV depends on refurb history: a recently refurbished airframe can feel remarkably contemporary, while a stock 1998 build shows its age.

Performance

Twin Rolls-Royce BR710A1-10 engines deliver 14,750 pounds of thrust each. Maximum operating Mach is 0.885; long-range cruise Mach 0.80. Certified ceiling is FL510. NBAA IFR range with eight passengers is 6,500 nautical miles — enough for New York to Tokyo (originally the qualifying mission), London to Singapore, Los Angeles to Sydney with a short technical stop, or transcontinental US with immense fuel reserves.

Balanced field length at MTOW is 6,000 ft. Landing distance is 3,180 ft. The GV was the first business jet to demonstrate 6,500 nm of NBAA IFR range and remains one of the most fuel-efficient ULR airframes ever built.

Missions, economics and verdict

Charter hourly rates run $8,000–$10,000 in North America; €8,500–€10,500 in Europe — the lowest in the ULR class. Empty-leg availability is moderate; the fleet is concentrated in the US, Europe and Middle East. Indicative pricing: New York to Tokyo from $105,000; London to Singapore from £115,000; Los Angeles to Honolulu from $48,000.

Against the G550 the GV gives up modernised avionics, cabin management and 250 nm of range at 25–30 per cent lower cost, with the same cabin cross-section. Against the Global Express XRS the GV offers a longer-range airframe at similar or lower hourly cost, on a narrower cabin. Charter the GV when the priority is ultra-long-range Gulfstream capability at the lowest hourly rate in class.

WHO SHOULD CHARTER THIS

Why choose the Gulfstream GV?

The right client profile for the GV: 14–16 passengers, missions inside its 6,500 nm range, and routes where the ultra long range cabin size is the sweet spot between cost and comfort.

  • Original ultra-long-range Gulfstream
  • Proven Rolls-Royce BR710 powerplant
  • Most economical ULR airframe

RANGE & LIMITATIONS

What the GV can — and can't — do

Non-stop range

6,500 nm with typical payload. Missions beyond this figure require a technical fuel stop — expect 30–45 minutes on the ground and a modest re-quote. On strong headwinds or full-cabin days the practical range trims by 5–10%.

Runway requirement

Balanced-field length around 6,000 ft. Rules out very short-strip airfields (Courchevel, Lugano, London City steep-approach) unless the airframe is specifically certified — our ops team validates every airport pairing before we confirm the quote.

Payload & baggage

226 cu ft of hold space with 14–16 passengers. Ski, golf and dive equipment fit for most parties; larger groups with full luggage should size up one category to preserve the range figure above.
