OVERVIEW

Bombardier Global Express XRS

The Bombardier Global Express XRS was the original ultra-long-range Bombardier — 6,150 nm of nonstop range, three living zones and the widest cabin in the ULR class until the Global 7500 arrived.

IN DEPTH

The complete guide to chartering the Bombardier Global Express XRS

The story behind the Global Express XRS

The Bombardier Global Express was the aircraft that ended Gulfstream's monopoly on true ultra-long-range business aviation. Launched in 1993 and entering service in 1999, it was the first purpose-designed business jet with a wide-body three-zone cabin and the range to fly New York to Tokyo nonstop. The XRS variant arrived in 2005 with more fuel, uprated Rolls-Royce BR710 engines and a modernised cabin — 6,150 nautical miles of range and 40 additional cubic feet of usable cabin volume compared with the original Global Express.

For charter clients the XRS is the value proposition inside the ultra-long-range class: a genuine wide-body ULR cabin at 25–35 per cent lower hourly cost than a G650 or Global 7500. The airframe remains one of the most in-demand heavy charter jets on both sides of the Atlantic — over 300 units in service, broad operator network and empty-leg availability that neither the newer Globals nor the Gulfstream ULR flagships can match.

On board

Cabin dimensions: 48 feet 4 inches long, 8 feet 2 inches wide and 6 feet 3 inches tall — one of the widest cabins in service, only bettered inside the ULR class by the Global 7500 and Falcon 10X. Standard XRS layout is a 13-passenger three-zone configuration: forward four-place club, mid-cabin conference group of four opposite a three-place divan, and aft private stateroom with berthable divan and en-suite lavatory. Charter builds commonly carry 14 passengers with two lavatories.

Baggage volume is a class-leading 195 cubic feet, fully accessible in flight through a walk-in aft baggage compartment — a genuine advantage over Gulfstream's mid-cabin baggage door layout. Cabin altitude at FL450 is 5,680 ft, marginally higher than newer Globals but still exceptional for a 2005-era design. Cabin management on retrofit aircraft frequently includes Ka-band Wi-Fi, HD monitors and Bluetooth pairing; original 2005–2010 aircraft may still carry Airshow 4000 and Iridium.

Performance

Twin Rolls-Royce BR710A2-20 engines deliver 14,750 pounds of thrust each. Maximum operating Mach is 0.89; long-range cruise Mach 0.85. Certified ceiling is FL510. NBAA IFR range with eight passengers is 6,150 nautical miles — enough for New York to Tokyo (with reserves and typical winter tailwinds), London to Singapore, Los Angeles to Sydney with a short technical stop, or Dubai to Los Angeles nonstop in most conditions.

Balanced field length at MTOW is 6,476 ft. Landing distance is 2,670 ft. Runway performance is competitive rather than exceptional; the XRS is a full ULR-class airframe and prefers 6,500 ft-plus runways at maximum weight, though it operates comfortably from most European and North American business-jet fields.

Missions, economics and verdict

Charter hourly rates run $10,500–$13,000 in North America; €11,000–€13,500 in Europe — meaningfully below a G650 or Global 7500. Empty-leg availability is the best in the ULR class thanks to the large fleet. Indicative pricing: New York to Tokyo from $128,000; London to Hong Kong from £132,000; Geneva to Singapore from CHF 138,000; Los Angeles to Sydney from $148,000.

Against the Global 6000 the XRS gives up 150 nm of range and modernised avionics at 10–15 per cent lower cost, with the same cabin. Against the Gulfstream G550 the XRS wins on cabin width and baggage volume, loses on 600 nm of range and cabin altitude. The XRS is the aircraft to charter when a genuine wide-body ULR cabin at competitive rates matters more than the newest airframe.

WHO SHOULD CHARTER THIS

Why choose the Bombardier Global Express XRS?

The right client profile for the XRS: 14–16 passengers, missions inside its 6,150 nm range, and routes where the ultra long range cabin size is the sweet spot between cost and comfort.

  • Original ULR Bombardier
  • Wide-body three-zone cabin
  • Lower hourly cost than Global 6000/7500

RANGE & LIMITATIONS

What the XRS can — and can't — do

Non-stop range

6,150 nm with typical payload. Missions beyond this figure require a technical fuel stop — expect 30–45 minutes on the ground and a modest re-quote. On strong headwinds or full-cabin days the practical range trims by 5–10%.

Runway requirement

Balanced-field length around 6,476 ft. Rules out very short-strip airfields (Courchevel, Lugano, London City steep-approach) unless the airframe is specifically certified — our ops team validates every airport pairing before we confirm the quote.

Payload & baggage

195 cu ft of hold space with 14–16 passengers. Ski, golf and dive equipment fit for most parties; larger groups with full luggage should size up one category to preserve the range figure above.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Yes — most aircraft in this class offer high-speed Ka-band or Starlink connectivity suitable for video calls and streaming throughout cruise.

Can pets fly on board?

Pets travel in the cabin alongside their owners on every Limitless Sky charter at no extra charge. Tell us the species and weight when you request a quote.

How quickly can the aircraft be ready?

Once a quote is confirmed, this aircraft can typically be positioned within 2–4 hours anywhere in its home region, and within 24 hours globally.
