DECISION FRAMEWORK
Four inputs decide the category: passenger count, non-stop range required, runway/airport constraints, and cabin-time comfort. Get those right and the aircraft picks itself.
Under 7 passengers with cabin bags: light or midsize. 8–10 with hold luggage: super-midsize or heavy. 10+ or ski/golf equipment: heavy or ultra-long-range.
Under 1,500 nm (London–Rome): light jet is enough. 1,500–3,500 nm (London–Dubai, NYC–LA): midsize / super-midsize. 3,500+ nm non-stop (London–NYC, Dubai–London, NYC–Tokyo): heavy or ultra-long-range.
Short runway (London City, Lugano, Courchevel, St Moritz, Aspen): steep-approach light jet or turboprop. Standard 1,800 m+ runway: any category. Slot-restricted hubs (Nice in July, Geneva during WEF): book 2–4 weeks ahead regardless of category.
Over 3 hours in the air: choose a full stand-up cabin, dedicated lavatory and external baggage — that means midsize or above. Over 6 hours or overnight: heavy or ultra-long-range with flat-bed berths and a proper galley.
One-way missions where dates flex: check the empty-leg board first — same aircraft, 40–75% off. Fixed dates: expect full charter rate for the matched category, plus positioning if the aircraft is not already on the field.
