IN DEPTH

The complete guide to chartering the Dassault Falcon 50EX

The story behind the Falcon 50EX

The Dassault Falcon 50EX is the 1996 development of the original Falcon 50 — Dassault's first three-engine widebody, launched in 1979. The EX added uprated Honeywell TFE731-40 engines with FADEC, updated Collins Pro Line 4 avionics and 400 nm of extra range. Production ran to 2008 with around 100 units built. The 50EX is smaller than the 900 family — narrower cabin, shorter length, less range — but retains the trijet configuration and Dassault reliability.

For charter the 50EX is the entry-level Falcon trijet — the smallest three-engine business jet in the market, offering trijet reliability, short-field performance and Falcon cabin experience at charter rates competitive with mid-size and super-midsize twins.

On board

Cabin dimensions: 23 feet 6 inches long, 6 feet 1 inch wide and 5 feet 9 inches tall — narrower and lower than any Falcon 900 variant. Standard layout is a nine-passenger club-four plus three-place divan and single seat. Cabin management is dated on original aircraft; refurbished examples feature updated systems and LED lighting.

Baggage volume is 115 cubic feet accessed in-flight. The lavatory is fully enclosed. Galley is forward-right with hot and cold storage.

Performance

Three Honeywell TFE731-40 engines deliver 3,700 pounds of thrust each. Maximum operating Mach is 0.83; long-range cruise Mach 0.75. Certified ceiling is FL490. NBAA IFR range with eight passengers is 3,220 nautical miles — enough for New York to LA, London to Dubai (with tech stop), or transcontinental US non-stop.

Balanced field length at MTOW is 4,850 ft. Landing distance is 2,300 ft. Excellent short-field performance for the range category.

Missions, economics and verdict

Charter hourly rates run $6,500–$8,000 in North America; €7,000–€8,500 in Europe. Indicative pricing: New York to LA from $34,000; London to Rome from £22,000; Miami to New York from $18,000; Geneva to Marrakech from CHF 26,000.

The 50EX suits four-to-nine-passenger transcontinental missions where trijet reliability, short-field access and Falcon cabin experience matter and full heavy-jet cabin volume is not required. Prefer a Legacy 600 for cabin length, or a Falcon 900B for full three-zone cabin. For entry-level Falcon trijet capability, the 50EX is the aircraft.

WHO SHOULD CHARTER THIS

Why choose the Dassault Falcon 50EX?

The right client profile for the 50EX: 9 passengers, missions inside its 3,200 nm range, and routes where the heavy jet cabin size is the sweet spot between cost and comfort.

  • Three-engine redundancy
  • Short-runway capable heavy jet
  • Trademark Falcon cabin quietness

RANGE & LIMITATIONS

What the 50EX can — and can't — do

Non-stop range

3,200 nm with typical payload. Missions beyond this figure require a technical fuel stop — expect 30–45 minutes on the ground and a modest re-quote. On strong headwinds or full-cabin days the practical range trims by 5–10%.

Runway requirement

Balanced-field length around 4,600 ft. Rules out very short-strip airfields (Courchevel, Lugano, London City steep-approach) unless the airframe is specifically certified — our ops team validates every airport pairing before we confirm the quote.

Payload & baggage

115 cu ft of hold space with 9 passengers. Ski, golf and dive equipment fit for most parties; larger groups with full luggage should size up one category to preserve the range figure above.
